Dr. Jin Lei is a pioneering figure in China’s biopharmaceutical industry and a leading expert in growth hormone research and development. In 1994, he went to the United States for advanced studies and earned his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of California.
Upon returning to China, Dr. Jin founded GenSci , where he has led groundbreaking innovations in recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) therapies. Under his leadership, GenSci launched China’s first domestically developed recombinant human growth hormone for injection in 1998 and recombinant human growth hormone injection in 2005—breaking the long-standing monopoly of imported products in the Chinese market.
In 2014, Dr. Jin led his team to develop and commercialize the world’s first long-acting recombinant human growth hormone , marking a revolutionary milestone in pediatric endocrinology. This innovation ended the 60-year practice of daily injections, ushering in the era of weekly growth hormone therapy , significantly improving patient compliance and quality of life. His work has set the global R&D direction for next-generation growth hormone treatments.
Honors and Awards:
• Three-time recipient of the China Pharmaceutical Development Award (1999, 2005, 2019) by the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association
• National Achievement Award for Returned Overseas Students (2003), conferred by six ministries including the Central Organization Department
• Appointed "China Torch Entrepreneurial Action Mentor" (2007)
• Second Prize , National Science and Technology Progress Award (2015), for the project "Research and Industrialization of Recombinant Human Growth Hormone Series Products"
• Recipient of the National "Outstanding Engineer Award" (2016)
